This is Deep Structures, a sketchbook-like journal of thoughts on architecture, urbanism, and mindfulness. Moreover, it is a space for me to practice the art of writing. I am not a writer, and will not pretend to be. This space is for my own personal development—to learn, write, and evolve.
The name derives from an open letter written by the late Christopher Alexander in 2002 to members of a listserv for classicists (which I first read here). Alexander urges architects to pursue the discourse of Deep Structures, a term I believe he fashioned. Deep Structures, as I read it, are the underlying rules of buildings that celebrate life, nature, local history, and common values.
